Some of the challenges dealing with cultural clashes are not being able to help clients to the best of the advocate’s ability, making someone feel bad about their cultural differences and not understanding where they are coming from. Not being able to communicate with a client means you will not be able to help them. Also, if they feel as though the advocate is judging them per their cultural differences then they will not be honest in needing help in their situation. Being culturally insensitive will only make the client push the advocate away.
In our textbook Advocacy for Social Justice, the author Michelle Martin (2015) said it best cultural competence helps advocates better understand how people from different cultural backgrounds define and experience violence, oppression and exploitation, historic and existing barriers to receiving assistance, etc. (p.g 67). Also, it is pointed out that three primary components of becoming a culturally competent human services provider are an awareness of one’s own cultural values and biases, an awareness of one’s clients’ worldview, and the use of culturally appropriate intervention strategies (Martin, 2015). This is accurate based on if I did not practice all three of these components my domestic violence survivors would be honest with me. One thing I’ve learned in the field is to be honest and upfront. Say “I do not understand what this means, could you please explain further” or ask them to help you understand their culture. It’s okay to not know however, it is not okay to be culturally insensitive and now want to further your education on the differences.

One of the biggest challenges when advocating for gender rights on a global level is to understand how cultures influence every ethnic group. When advocating for gender rights we must be careful about how we approach every ethnic group, because what might be normal for one culture might not be for other. We have to learn more about other cultures to respect everyone’s beliefs and approach them with respect. According to Martin (2019), there are several ethical considerations that must be taken into consideration when working with vulnerable and oppressed women, a few of which I touched on in this section. The first relates to ensuring the use of a culturally competent approach to increase sensitivity to issues involving race, socioeconomic level, education level, and historic treatment of vulnerable subgroups within the female population. When we talk about global advocacy we have to fully understand the differences between Western cultures and cultures within the United States because the level of sensitivity in Western cultures is much higher, especially when we talk about their beliefs and religion.
