QUESTION
Throughout the term, you will be working on component parts of a research project regarding a company that recently went public via an IPO. The objective of this project is to integrate the various parts of the course and to see how the concepts apply in practice. The project is an individual one as each of you will be examining a different company. However, I believe you may derive some benefits from working together with other students on aspects of the project so feel free to collaborate with other students when you think there may be value in doing so. To begin the project, you each need to select a VC backed company that has gone public within the last few year. A list of prospective companies is provided in iLean and the Term Project document in iLearn has more information about how to go about selecting your company. Your selection is due by the date indicated in the Term Project document. Remember that each of you must work on a unique company so it will be valuable to make your selection quickly or to identify an back-up option or two in case the company you want is already claimed by another student. Also, dont act too quickly as you need to make sure you can get the essential data for the company. Most importantly, you must be able to get the stock price history after the IPO and you must be able to get a copy of the IPO prospectus. The Term Project document includes suggestions of where you can find this kind of information.
At various times during the term, you will be asked to make (1) a revenue forecast, (2) a profit forecast, and (3) a comparables-based valuation. These steps are @Risk projects 3 through 5 and do not need to be included with your final submission.
You can find historical information on the company from the companys website and/or the SECs website (sec.gov) using EDGAR. You should look for reports like 10-Ks (annual reports),
