The harm done by Truman’s scare tactics was to oversensitize Americans to the threat of Communism, and to create such an atmosphere of fear and anxiety that it triggered the “paranoid style” in American politics. Truman’s oversimplified version of a world of good and evil, us against them, made diplomatic solutions and compromise more difficult.
