The
incident

This criterion focuses on 1) the clarity of the description of
the experience and 2) the focus on the self throughout the write up of the
experience. Fail standard assignments will have an unclear time line for
events and a confused description of who did what throughout. They will
include virtually no references to the student’s thoughts, behaviours or
feelings of the incident. Higher achieving descriptions will present the
experience almost like a movie in the reader’s mind. They will incorporate
significant references to the student’s thoughts, behaviours and feelings.

The incident.
Delete
this blue text before you submit your assignment.Part 1 of the
assignment – titled ‘The incident’ – asks you to write up an incident from your
life which relates to ‘people orientation’ and or ‘team orientation’ as a
cultural value. (These are two of the seven (7) common characteristics of
organisational culture listed on page 112 of the textbook). This section of
your assignment is to be written up ‘objectively’ as a kind of case study in
which you detail what you said, did and thought at each point of this incident
as the incident unfolded.
Please note you do not need to
choose an incident in which you are an employee, experiencing the culture of
your employing organisation, although that would be highly acceptable. You
could choose an incident in which you were a client or customer of an
organisation, for example a patient at a hospital or a student of a school or
this University.
An incident that may be appropriate
to ‘people orientation’ would be an incident in which you felt valued or
de-valued as a person by the organisation. An incident that would be
appropriate to ‘team orientation’ would be one in which you were strongly
encouraged to work with others or strongly discouraged from working with
others.
Delete this blue text and insert
your incident here. Make sure also that you type your response in 12 point
font, Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing and left hand justified – just as the
text appearsin this sample of writing. Please use black ink not blue throughout your
assignment.
This section should be
500 words in length with an allowance of 10% shorter or longer. That is, it
must be 450 – 550 words in length.
For additional guidelines on
how to write up your incident refer to combined Lecture 02.01& 02.02

Personal reflections on the incident.
Delete this
blue text before you submit your assignment. The
second part of the assignment – titled ‘Personal reflections’ – asks you to
engage in a more personal and introspective form of reflection on the incident
your wrote up. Specifically you are
asked to identify previously unidentified personal strengths of yours that are
worth cultivating and or previously unidentified (and possibly unhelpful)
assumptions you have made that relate to for example your approach to and or
preferences regarding organisational culture.
(For example some students may like working in settings that have a high
team orientation while other may prefer to work in settings that have a low
team orientation).

incident refer to combined Lecture 02.01& 02.02 Writing up and reflecting

before you submit your assignment. The third part of this assignment –
titled ‘Applying theory to the incident’ – asks you to write a 300 word short
essay (+/- 10% allowance of the word count) in which you apply ‘people
orientation’ and or ‘team orientation’ (culture theory) to your incident.
(These are two of the seven (7) common characteristics of organisational
culture listed on page 112 of the textbook). This short essay is worth 50% of
the marks available for this assignment.
This section should be 300 words in length with an allowance of 10% shorter or
longer. That is, it must be 360 – 330 words in length. Only the words you write
yourself are counted in the final word count.Direct quotes are not
counted. The in-text citation information (author, date) is included in the
