Both regions benefitted from infusion of government money for dam and irrigation projects during the New Deal, and later, and for defense industries and military bases during World War II. Cold War government spending on military bases, the aircraft industry and shipyards, and on the oil, chemical, and metal industries also brought billions of federal dollars into the South and West.
