If you were a middle-class citizen in early nineteenth-century America, where would you rather have lived, in the North or the South? Why?

ANSWER
Consider: the North had a thriving middle class–economic opportunities were greater there; their economic skills were needed; their numbers made them politically potent. In the South, the planter aristocracy dominated the political, economic, and social life; there were no cities to support an urban middle class, etc.
