Imperial: Since 1865, the United States had acquired Wake, Midway, Guam, Samoa, Hawaii, and the Philippines in the Pacific, and Puerto Rico and a protectorate over Cuba in the Caribbean. It had also conducted its diplomacy in an “imperial” manner with Chile and Venezuela.
Non-imperial: This was an aberrant burst of colony gathering that did not continue after 1900.
