Explain why the United States, which went to war to “make the world safe for democracy” and waged “war to end war,” refused to join an international peacekeeping assembly–the League of Nations.
What will be an ideal response?
ANSWER
Wilson was partly to blame. He erred in not involving the Senate and the Republican Party earlier and more completely in the peace process. He also doomed American participation in the League by refusing to compromise with the reservationists, most of whom favored League membership, but not on his terms alone. Henry Cabot Lodge was committed to rejecting Wilson’s terms of League membership on a personal level. Generally, there was some concern that League membership might involve the United States in world affairs on a level Americans could not be comfortable with.
